A Yellow Memoir

The Yellow Wallpaper is a powerful and visual story about a woman who suffers a mental breakdown being confined to one room in a house.

The protagonist in the story is an unreliable narrator, whose name we never know, and I believe it is not important that we know her name. It is not about one individual and her story, but about things particular to that time period, that were hinted at in the story. The intent behind it was primarily to point out the flaws in the rest cure, which used to be prescribed to women who suffered mental breakdowns.

The highly visual nature of the story meant that there were some very striking images that stood out from the text.

A yellow memoir is a show that takes threads from this story and presents to the viewer a sequence of performances that subtly hint at the narrative. Lead into the house under the pretense of viewing it for rent, the audience is taken through each room that houses a certain memory that the owner has with it, which they see come to life in front of them. Primarily a physical theatre experience, they are guided through these different rooms to see glimpses of a story that lives on through time.
